@NtlMuseumsScot #rbsmuseumlates Vikings!

The Vikings returned to Edinburgh on Friday February 22nd, for the latest evening of creative entertainment at The National Museum of Scotland.  This multi-award winning event called RBS Museum Lates is a regular favorite in The Red Door Gallery calendar as it gives us the chance to commission some participatory projects from one of the highly talented artists and illustrators we work with.  Astrid Jaekel's bold use of monochrome seemed the perfect fit for this Viking themed evening!

Astrid created 8 DIY badge designs which referenced tapestries, bed posts, coins and folklore all to be found in the Museum's Viking exhibition (on display until May 12th).  Her final black and white pieces were delightfully witty and playful but had enough room for the Museum Lates guests to colour them in.  They varied in complexity, which satisfied the speedy novice through to the painstaking professional as they added colour and text to the unfinished badges.  Ashley and Lindsey were on hand to help cut and stamp the badges into their durable shells, so everyone left with a truly unique, wearable artwork!

In keeping with the Viking theme, Astrid also designed a Cut-out & Make Viking Drinking Horn, inspired by the myth that Viking's wore horns on their helmet - they actually wore horns around their necks and used them to drink their water... or something a little more alcoholic from!  We were on hand with a Runic Alphabet so the participants could add their own secret message to the drinking horn or badge designs.  The sharp font gives a definate style and the people we were chatting with seemed to either write their name, or get a little rude!

Rude or polite, we would love to see photo's of your badges and drinking horns so please email them to nicky@edinburghart.com or tweet them to us.  You can also post them on our Facebook page, where lots of our photos from the night are up - and there are some good snaps in there so please have a peep!

There was an exhibit of some of Astrid Jaekel's works on the night, along with other pieces by The Lindstrom Effect, Mr Millerchip, Mrs Eliot Books, Laurie Hastings and many others.If you would like to see some more works by Astrid Jaekel, please click here - more to be added this week!    If a little something caught your eye, drop an email to nicky@edinburghart.com or call 01314773255 and we will trace it back for ya.

As always, thanks to The National Museum of Scotland for letting us join in the fun, to Astrid for all her beautiful works and y'all for making it such ruddy fun!  Museum Lates is back on May 17th and we think this may be the best yet, so keep the date free and check here regularly for notification of ticket sales!
